Fear keeps most people from enacting their given tasks. Some follow tradition, thinking that it's the right thing but sometimes it's not. There are others that seek tasks out of curiosity only to find remorse instead of comfort or confidence.

[He looks to the fire and nods.]

It's true that many people don't entirely understand their situations to embrace their futures effectively.

[He tosses a stray piece of wood into the fire.]

My father was a Marine. My grandfather was a Cherokee medicine man. Both are heavy in tradition and I could have been both but neither was the path that was chosen for me by God. I didn't discover it on my own. It was presented to me with the label "opportunity". I could have embraced my grandfather's religion and stayed a heathen but I didn't. I saw the world through the eyes of a child and saw a broken down fort instead of a perfect world....if there ever is such a thing.

We're given the simple task of going forth to prosper by God. Yet God needs people to protect that prosperity. Crusaders did it through control and war. That didn't do us much good and we destroyed the temple twice in the process. How is that protection?
