You can lock certain things on it and if you need to make a mass communication, just hit this button and it'll let you be seen by everyone. To keep them private, or at least a little harder for others to read, just scroll down your contacts and press this button to speak to them.

It takes a bit of getting used to but it's not all that bad. Be careful what you say publicly. It can eventually backfire on you.
