Cup 012: Iroh [Video]

[Iroh's in some building. It might be Macy's, or Saks 5th Avenue, or anything else, but whatever it is, it's decked out for the holidays with lights and wreathes.]

Could someone explain to me what this holiday's all about? Everyone in the city seems to be celebrating it.

You don't know what Christmas is?

No, I'm afraid not. There is no Christmas where I'm from. It seems that the closest thing we have is a celebration of the winter solstice. But that is far less elaborate than this.

Well the holiday was originally meant to celebrate the birth of Jesus, but it seems to be different as time went on for some people.

Different how? Do you mean all of this?

[He takes in the grand decorations with a sweep of the blackberry's camera.]

Partly, but the other is the fact that not everyone in the world is Christian, so it's celebrated differently for religion to.

It was originally a religious holiday, although in a lot of countries it's become enough of a part of the culture that people who aren't Christian celebrate it anyway...

I... don't know where you're from to even have a clue where to start.

[He chuckles.] I come from the Fire Nation. I know it's not part of the same world that most people seem to come from.

Mmm... God - the original creator - deciding that the world had fallen from the original idea; so a virgin lady, Mary, gave birth to a child that was His son and His incarnation on Earth, to bring new teachings to the world and eventually die as a sacrifice for the sins of mankind.

The ... exact date itself gets bogged down in history and one of the older churches having conflicts with other religions - that's why it's around the Winter Solstice - but that's the basic idea; it's the birth of Christ, the child that was meant to be a savior for the world.

Such a grand and weighty idea. [The duties of the Avatar seem similar, but the Avatar serves the planet, not the people or a God. Though perhaps those ideas are not so dissimilar.]

Then this is a very important holiday indeed. What do people do to celebrate it? Besides this?

It can be a wonderful thing. [There's a hint of sadness on that - it is for the people with actual faith who understand the ideals, at least...And as much as he knows what the holiday's supposed to be, he's spent enough time around law enforcement to know the crime and suicide statistics all too well.]

Some of it depends on where you are - usually families try to get together, from however far they've scattered; there's usually a big dinner, and everyone gives gifts to the people they care about on Christmas morning. Bigger cities will have large celebrations and festivals, and quite a few people take it as a reminder to show more kindness to others - there's a lot of extra charity work done around the holiday, particularly for children. Churches hold special services, and some areas still go out caroling, with people in big groups going around the town singing hymns and songs.

It does sound quite lovely. A holiday devoted to goodwill and harmony. [He smiles.] Perhaps everyone should celebrate such a thing.

[And the idea of food and gift giving sounds pretty good, too.]

[He smiles, although it's almost distant.] The meaning gets a little lost sometimes, but ...

I think a lot of people could benefit from taking time to dwell on the better parts of life sometimes.

I agree completely. We too often get caught up in the stress and struggles of life. A time to reflect on the pleasures and joys of life...I think we all need that.

[He nods.]
