42nd Blast || Mello || [Accidental Video]

[There's a calender on the wall of M&M's apartment, one that probably came with the place as the image on top is one of a sappy Norman Rockwell knock-off. A boy and a dog playing under a Christmas tree. Mello is staring at the date however. December 13th.

His birthday.

There are so many reasons why this seems surreal. For one his 20th birthday was less than eight months ago, it had been the summer at the Manor but January in his world, so the idea that it was his 21st makes it seem unreal. Second, thanks to B's handy eyes he now knows he won't actually make it this far. Five minutes from the time he was transported here he will die.

It feels almost like a play. It can't really be his birthday, right? But there it is, printed in front of him. Mello sighs and pulls the calender off the wall. He really doesn't want to deal with his birthday right now.]

One of two things makes me want to rip a calendar off the wall. It's either someone's anniversary is coming up and I'm jealous or it's a reminder that something bad happened that I don't want to remember it.

[He sneezes and coughs. Despite his horrible condition, he's not about to let something like this go without reaching some sort of closure. Been there, done that.]

[Mello spins around. His blue eyes dart around trying to find the source of the voice. Finally they find the Blackberry amongst the mess of Matt's clothes on the floor. He picks it up]

No, keep yours I'll keep mine.

[Reading Mello's mind would probably be a scary thing. All the chaos and the emotion, the genius and the crazy...most peoples' heads would probably pop like a balloon.

But Matt thinks he could understand and handle it better than most, even if third place was a million miles away from second. He could stand it because he has a reason to.

He watches the blond pull the calendar off the wall and knows that in light of recent events, it's the last thing he wants to deal with. ...No pun intended. But Matt can't just ignore the day. Even though he could if it were anyone else's...his own included.]

[Matt doesn't say anything, he just slides the box from under the bed. A birthday present, obviously. Matt doesn't talk about how he had to actually go outside to get it for him, or how awkward he felt buying a gift. The day isn't about him.

Besides, if Mello imagines it, he'll already know.

[Mello turns around now. Because the only happy birthdays he's ever had have been with Matt. Matt was the only person at Wammy's House who ever acknowledged it, the only fellow orphan who knew, and even when they were kids he made it special. Mello gives his partner a weary smile]

[Matt smirks a little with the words. Inside the box? One of those ridiculously over-sized Hershey's kisses. Pounds of chocolate.]

[He finishes after a moment. Mello can do anything that he wants today and expect Matt to have his back.]

[Mello figures it's Matt, who stepped out for a second. He leans up to look out of the peep hole]

[B's face is swelled and disproportionate in the concave peep hole. He smiles and speaks through the door.]

[Mello is very glad he didn't open the door. His heart catches for a second and his eyes go wide, it's not so much fear as shock. How does he know? Mello sneaks away from the door to get Matt's gun, since his own has yet to be returned to him]

[Mello searches for the blackberry, inwardly cursing for not checking that the fucking thing was on. He sets the privacy function. He's glad to hear L's voice again and to know that his mentor isn't still angry at him. "Happy birthday" is not a sentiment he can really get excited about, however.]

[A small grin appears on Light's face that widens as the feed progresses. It didn't take a genius to figure out the idiot was upset.
