001 - Naomi Misora - [Audio/Text]

[Uneven breathing heard as the audio suddenly comes on]

Wh –

[and is just as abruptly cut off. Naomi puts a hand to her temple, frustrated at her impulsiveness. She had to be careful. He already knows her voice after all. Voice, face, name, everything! For all she knows, she was and still is under that monster's control. Frantically, the former FBI agent switches to text instead.]

Who's in charge here? I need to get to the closest police station. Please, it's urgent!

[Not even they could be completely trusted, but god, she was finally free from that unnatural, unbearable death wish that had smothered her for what seemed like an eternity, she was finally free to think, and who knows for how long such freedom will last. Her finger flies toward the "send" button but pauses at the last second. Naomi reads over the note she had just written in that obvious rush of panic. Ugh, like an agitated mess.]

Thank you.

[She decides to tack on for good measure before ending the feed along with a long overdue exhale.]

(ooc: She'll be ultra paranoid with the first few people who respond but will get progressively calmer further down the line as she comes to terms with what's actually going on.)

[Light frowns slightly, sifting through this information very carefully. If Naomi really is from 2002, it would mean that she was from a time before Kira existed...which was, in truth a comforting thought, but Light wouldn't fall for a shoddy lie like that. He muses with a pleased smirk. Don't they train their agents to tell convincing lies in America?

Only moments earlier she was claiming that the likelihood that they were from the same world was low, but that had changed with the mention of Tokyo University. Tossing aside multiverse theory for the moment, this coupled with that damning time delay after Light had given Misora his name, made this the most insultingly easy game of connect the dots he had ever played. The minor victory however, pales in comparison to the crushing odds against him. Did she or did she not remember his final concluding remarks? Why was I so careless? He rubs his temples, trying to untangle himself from the sticky threads of spiderweb weaved around him. How the hell was anyone supposed to anticipate this... this nonsense? The only one who knew exactly when he was from was Mikami, so he had some degree of flexibility in choosing a time frame, but for now, he needed to turn this game of twenty questions around.]

Thank you for saying so, but I believe hard work is much more important than natural intelligence. May I ask why you think we are from the same world, Naomi-san?

[Tch. Light's eyes narrow at this woman's attitude. He liked her significantly more when she was permanently incapacitated. During particularly boring lectures where it seemed the professor's voice would lull even statues to sleep, he wondered idly what inventive measures she had taken to conceal her death. Takada had always wondered why Light seemed to enjoy that class so much.]

Ah, really? As famous as Tokyo University is in Japan, I was not expecting a foreigner, least of all an FBI agent that deals with domestic American affairs, to recognize the name.

[Vaguely worded threats? Light closes his eyes, leaning his head back against the wall to stare up at his ceiling. There was no doubt about it now; Misora remembered his victorious gloat. It wouldn't amount to much without conclusive evidence, especially if he continued to deny ever meeting her. There wasn't any evidence to prove the two of them ever met- L would have uncovered it if it did- but as the other people from his world were prone to doing here, she was going to make herself a thorn in his side. And for what? Did these people really delude themselves into thinking they could make him pay for his actions here? As if.]

I'm sure. Working with the FBI must have given you invaluable insight into many different areas of expertise.

[He pinches the bridge of his nose, forcing himself to focus. As interesting as paint chips were, they would never coalesce into anything meaningful. Tangible answers for instance. He had no doubt that L and Mello, both of whom were here, would take great pleasure in tearing apart any elegant untruths he told Misora. But Light too, is through with meaningless pleasantries.]

You're quite right, but this was a much more interesting topic than your orignal query. However, I hardly think hearing what year it was would lead us any closer to determining if we are from the same world. We've established that Tokyo University exists in your world, and the FBI exists in mine. Furthermore, if you were in America all this time, and I was in Japan, I doubt we would have ever met. So, if you'll excuse my forwardness, what is it that you are really after, Naomi-san?

Have you heard of something called multiverse theory, Naomi-san? It is possible that even despite being what appears to be the same world and the possibly even the same time period, there are still subtle differences that exist that change the fundamental make up of our existences. In other words, we could very well be from variations on the same world. You'll understand then, if I remain skeptical about what value a specific time period will have in furthering your investigation. Unless, of course, you are willing to delve into the specific events that happened around the 2002 of your world.

Granted, you do have every right to be alarmed given your circumstances, but think of it from our perspective. Who is to say that you aren't some monstrosity coming in from another world? The Author seems to have a penchant for such individuals.

For all I know, you could be hell bent on slaughtering everyone of us. Now of course, the chances of that don't seem very high, but the point is this, Naomi-san: just as you have every reason to be suspicious of me, I have every reason to be suspicious of you. I don't see why I should have to answer to a person who hides behind a block of text, who has on more than one occasion employed veiled threats to obtain information. Do you understand?

[Light sighs. His expression is one that borders on total exasperation as he reads Misora's text. Her parasitic persistence is beginning to grate on his nerves, though he could hear the dulcet tones of desperation peppered in with her unstated accusations. Pleasing as those were to hear, Light is far from popping open imaginary bottles of champagne. He rubs his temples. Stubbornly dodging the question was a miscalculation on his part; it had been a decision made out of childish spite- though he doubts it would prove to be fatal. How could it be? He had already admitted his true identity to this woman before she died. Anything else he said was.. well in a sense delaying the inevitable.]

Tossing aside the fact that you would find it suspicious, should I answer your every question now, you're right. I have not been treating you fairly, Naomi-san. However, in my defense, threatening me certainly did not help your cause. I can admit that diplomacy is not always my strongest suit.

[A smirk. Light is actually close to laughing. No, I don't think I will Agent Misora. I'm rather fond of this game.]

"We?" I'm confused, Naomi-san. I don't believe I've ever had the...pleasure of speaking with you before.

[Amused as he is by the change in media, though much less so by the volume at which Misora made her displeasure known, Light's smirk widens even further before he responds. Didn't Misora know that showing emotion to the enemy meant one had already lost the battle? He speaks in a careful manner, with precisely timed out pauses and parses of hesitation to indicate his scripted inner turmoil.]

Game...? Kira? [An audible sigh.] Look. I'm afraid I don't know what you are talking about. Do you frequently accuse strangers of committing homicide? I'm sure you must know this, but that sort of thing has the tendency to rub people the wrong way.

[Another sigh. This one actually sounds genuine. Really Misora, what is the point in encrypting this feed if you're going to continue yelling like this?]

Naomi-san. Calm down. [You're embarrassing yourself] Please. I really don't know what you're talking about. As certain as you are that you know me, I really cannot say the same is true in reverse. However, what I can say for certain is this.

[His tone is serious at this point.]

You are not in a world where any of our pasts are relevant. Our lives right now are in the hands of the Author, and for all you know, we could all wake up one day in the middle of a black hole. Or in the belly of a Leviathan for that matter. I hardly think this is the time or place to bring up accusations for which you have no grounds. Cooperation, not pointless antagonism, is the key to survival here. Consider it a piece of honest advice.

[A pause. One that is slightly longer than usual. When Light does speak, his voice is very subtly different from the same controlled tone he had been using up until this point. But if Naomi were to think it has any reason to do with guilt, she would be hilariously mistaken. Raye Penber's death is quite justified. What has Light faltering is the thought of his father's death.]

...I don't recall ever claiming that it was an easy task. On the other hand, what other option do you have?
