✟ Seventh Wink - [ Audio || Private to Light ] - I came back

[ It took Misa a while to realize where she was again. The last thing she remembered was running to do what Light instructed her. She was to find the Death Note he buried. The rest--- became a blur. When she finally realized that she was in the manor again--- she could recognize her room--- she knew it was Light she had to contact first.

She believed it would all be alright if Light was here. She didn't want to stay in this strange world alone. ]

Light?! Light!?

Is Light still here?

It's Misa. Misa is here---Light? Please answer me?

[ Oh, Light can hear Misa alright. The volume--damn, had this woman always been this loud?-- makes it impossible not to hear. He wants to assume this is the same Misa who disappeared last time considering the fact that she knew to call Light directly, and privately for that matter- which, yes, pleases him to see that she's actually learning. There's still that slight chance, it's a different incarnation of Misa though, but that's a non-issue. No matter what the time frame, Light's confident he can win Misa's affection.

But her arrival (return?) causes incredibly mixed feelings really. On the one hand, there's the pleasant aspect of having someone willing to follow your orders return. On the other hand, it's Misa. He sits up, and quickly replies to the frantic call.
]

Yes, Misa. I'm [still] here. What happened?

[....Smart, huh? It's actually somewhat painful to hear it. Almost. Rubbing his forehead with his free hand, he continues on, as though nothing is wrong. ]

Yes, that's very good, Misa. I'm glad you remembered to do that. [ Truthful enough, but. ]

Did you go back home?

audio; locked /oooh, enjoy breakfast :3

[ So it's as Light suspected; one didn't retain their memories of this place when they left it. It's a troubling thought as it means knowledge gained here is absolutely worthless, but there had to be a way around it. In fact- ]

Misa, were you able to take anything with you before you disappeared from this place? [ Damn it, he should have tested this. Slightly more hushed: ]

The Death Note Rem gave you, for instance. When you left this place, all of your belongings disappeared as well. Did you have it with you when you disappeared?

[ If his thinking is correct, if the Death Note itself belongs back in their world, rather than here, it must have returned with Misa as she did-- which could mean writing a message in the Note itself could be one way that information could be retained-- but then again. ]

Did you notice any missing time when you returned? Did anyone notice you were gone?

[ There's a slightly raised eyebrow that Misa can't see from her end of the conversation. This is the irrefutable proof that the Manor is a dimension separate from time. It fits in with a few observations Light himself has made. The lack of bodily changes during his unwanted month of slumber for one, but that's an answer to a very minor point of contention. The bigger picture now, is to figure out if there is a way to keep these oddly gained memories at all. Mello and Near are obviously both out to challenge Light's grasp on the world when he returns, presumably around 2010, if Near was to be believed, and there's no way he's about to lose what advantage being present at the Manor actually gives him.

The watch could be one way to do it. He had been wearing it when he had disappeared from his world, so that would undoubtedly still be on his person, along with the scrap of Note hidden inside it.

He pulls at the knob three times in quick succession to examine the hidden compartment. He could write Mello's real name on it, but without his face, it would amount to nothing. What's more important is to find a way to preserve his knowledge of the events that will transpire in his future. The scrap is too small for that, leaving the Death Note itself as his best option. If the Death Note here, is essentially the same Death Note as the one he had picked up from the sand back home, much like he is the same person here, as he is there, then the possibility that the message he leaves himself in the Note-- small, but worth a chance.
]

Nothing changed? You're sure of that? Including your clothing? You found yourself wearing the same clothes as you did prior to arriving at the Manor?

[ A pause. ]

Misa, where are you right now? I want to see you. [ Or more specifically her Death Note, but that's not something Misa needs to know explicitly. ]

[ There's a short silence before Light speaks again. The gap between his own preoccupations and Misa's is so wide that it feels surreal; as though he must be dreaming, or that this entire situation itself isn't real. How she is able to even think about shopping after returning to, what amounted to an interdimensional prison, isn't something Light comprehends. Finally when he speaks, it's somewhat terse. ]

Did your room number change? I will find you.

Right. Stay there.

[ Without any further pleasantry to pad the exchange, Light ends the feed and begins to move towards Misa's room. To an extent he's curious about this too; he's never seen one specific incarnation get written out of the story, only to return about a month later. The timing couldn't have been better either. Who knew what havoc Misa could have caused had she returned while he was forced into sleeping for a month.

Within a few minutes, he knocks twice on the door.
]

It's me.

[ Light tolerates the hug well enough with a somewhat resigned sounding tone of voice.]

It's good to see you again too.

[ He wraps his arms around her back in a show of affection, but really, he hadn't missed this charade at all. He lets go after a short moment. The sentiment itself, for once isn't entirely a lie; the return of an ally is never unappreciated. Not wanting to loiter in the hallway for longer than necessary, he leads Misa back into her room, shutting the door behind them. He clears his throat- hopefully, that earlier display would be enough to keep Misa on track for a few minutes. ]

So. You said you have the Note with you, right? Let me take a a look.

[ Misa's exuberance is something Light has to re-adjust to. Sickeningly well rested or not, his natural preference to simply accomplish the task at hand without filler or interruption conflicts with Misa's usual prancing about. Nonetheless, he's pleased when Misa produces a Death Note from her possessions. It's a false sense of security (or so he thinks) but, no-one else in the Manor knew that it wasn't working either, which.. in the right circumstances could work in Light's favor.

Light simply holds out his hand expectantly for the Note. Hand it over is the translation of that non-verbal gesture, which- he quickly supplements with speech.
]

You did well, Misa. Give it to me for a moment.

[ He's not in the mood for hand-holding. As it is, Light is furious with himself for neglecting to use the Note this way before. Though circumstances considered, his thoughts were more geared towards concealment. ]

((No worries, I was a bit slow too >>;; Hope your classes all went well!))

[ He takes the proffered Note out of Misa's hands and with a practiced casual air, rifles through the pages, expertly navigating it cover to cover. Of course, he isn't necessarily expecting to find anything physically unusual, or different about it, but.]

[ Eyes narrowed, and still busy contemplating a blank page. ] There's someone else here that you need to be aware of.

[ Pause. Then without offering any explanation, he tears a small corner of the paper out of Misa's Note and slips the fragment into his wallet. Part of a rudimentary physics experiment. He would do this to his own Note later. Continuing on in the same half distracted tone. ]

A boy, who goes by the name Near. White hair, looks to be adolescent.

[ He snaps the Note closed with a flick of his wrist. Spoken, this time with eye contact. ] Watch him. [ In other words. I want his name. ]

Misora is gone. Mello, however, is back. A younger version of him this time; he doesn't have the scar anymore. If either of them approach you, don't acknowledge anything. Can you do this?

[ Light's well aware of Misa's loyalty, that he hasn't questioned. It's her intellect that falls short of expectations. With a small half smile and his tone slightly less clipped; soft: ] I know. I'll be forever grateful to you.

[ To an extent anyway, it's true. And then his tone resumes its usual business-like manner. He frowns as it dawns on him that Gokudera's set-up has also disappeared. ]

We are going to have to do something about your room to protect you from B as that deranged psychopath is still here. I can set up a trip wire in the vent that will alert the entire Manor if he crosses it, which should be enough for the meantime.

[ Finally, he hands Misa back her Death Note. The Note didn't work, but it did go back and forth between dimensions. Physics would say that anything that happened here, would be isolated- including writing down memos to oneself in the Death Note. In theory, writing down Mello's name here, didn't mean that it would survive the time rift back. In other words, the Death Note would remain in the same pristine condition as Light had originally buried it all those months ago. An annoying thought. But it is worth the experiment if no one was able to find the Death Note, which- ]

How are you going to hide this?

[identity profile] finalarbiter.livejournal.com 2011-06-22 10:16 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah.

[The word comes out, almost as though he's distracted. Gokudera Hayato had been a useful little thing, Light wouldn't deny that. However, over the months that he had actually, unwittingly gotten to know the goddamn brat and his past, he couldn't help but feel... well, not sympathetic, but something that he recognized as being something resembling, but not quite, indebtedness than appreciative in nature. In any event, it was an unnecessary emotion to harbor towards another discardable human being. Annoying, too. Kneeling on the floor next to Misa, he uses the tips of his fingers to test the floorboards in the vicinity she indicated.]

Ah, I found it.

[He presses down on the floorboard, to reveal the space underneath.]

This should be good enough for now, but if anyone decides to seriously search your room, this won't be good enough. But [He frowns slightly.] I can't see any reason why anyone would bother. As long as you don't give anyone a reason to suspect anything, it shouldn't be an issue.

Was there anything else you needed to tell me?

[He should have known this would come up. This is Misa's infamous short attention span kicking in again, even in the most unromantic of situations. Where Light is contemplating how to possibly bend the rules of physics, Misa's head remains firmly on her goddamn hormones. Typical. Oh so typical. He sighs. Well if would shut her up. Besides, she hadn't exactly specified where.]

Sure.

[He angles his head towards hers, and leans in to peck her cheek.]

Welcome back, Misa. I missed you.

[...Not exactly untrue, either, seeing as Misa came with a very useful package called the Shinigami Eyes.]

[Aaaaah yes, then there's the second reason Light is begrudgingly glad to see Misa's return. The control. The knowledge that he literally has another person's life in his hands to toy with if he chose. Light wouldn't, being the moral, upstanding person he believes himself to be is, but the not-so-subtle living reminder of this fact does make him smirk to himself as he turns to leave Misa's room. For better or for worse, Misa is Light's most valuable ally at the Manor, and he would use whatever means to keep it that way.]

If there's anything you need make sure to call me on a private line, understand? And remember, keep an eye on the people I mentioned to you. If you do that, we can go on a date.
