Conan Edogawa - Case 030 - [In Person]

[Conan is angrily playing soccer by a wall he can kick the ball into when he so feels the need. He's not a happy camper and this happens to be his way of blowing off steam.

Every time the soccer ball comes back he kicks it right back at the wall- he's so wrapped up in blowing off steam he's not really aware of anything going around him right now]

[He goes flat deadpan, pulls out his Blackberry, and pulls up the post.]

Technically speaking, he didn't gain anything, and we got a good warning that we've kept Nakamori-san too out of the loop. She doesn't need to know details, but ... well, I've already started warning her about things like this, which she hasn't had to think about before.

How could she not know better!?

Because unlike the rest of us, she's had a normal childhood; her father isn't around home a lot, either, but she didn't get brought to the station, so she's been insulated from it. She's never been given a reason to think this way, and we all took it for granted that she'd somehow know on instinct alone what we know because we were raised in it.

She knows now, what that kind of thing means, and that she did risk your life there - she wants to be a cop, so I have an easy way to volunteer to teach her survival skills without flagging it as suspicious.

I'm sure something like that falls under common sense. [He... may have just called her stupid :|]

You'd be surprised. After all, I'd be almost out of work on my major cases if most people didn't take others at face value; there's a certain amount of implied trust that goes along with any society where there's a decent sense of order and safety. The greater majority of people don't think about the lines where that breaks down. She's been kept too protected from it in the past - she cares about people, and wants to believe in the better part of human nature, and those around her that know that, have ... always been more inclined to make sure she stayed well away from any harsh lessons, to protect her from getting hurt. [Himself included, so far.]

... Which, obviously, is turning out to be very flawed logic.

[he sighs] Well, as long as he does try going after her, I guess everything should be fine.

Basically.

Given how many other places she's basically only protected by being too fluffy for most people to want to harm her, I think that even if he weren't here, this place would be reason to start early on teaching her how to Not Be Prey before she tries to go into police work.

[Which ... is almost depressing, with Aoko.]

Being cute wouldn't be a good defense against Gin.

If he learns she has a connection to you, she'll be in big trouble-I would recommend watching over her closely if she's that [~~dumb~~] naive.

I can't watch her twenty-four seven - the best I can do is watch her as closely as I can, and teach her to watch out for herself so we can turn our backs on her now and then.

I still say that convincing Gin that open warfare isn't worth his time is better than somehow expecting to stop him.

Look--if Gin sees any kind of tactical advantage in killing us, he will--and if Haibara happens to show up I'm going to need your help in doing everything possible to protect her from him.

That's part of my point. He knows there isn't a tactical advantage. Attacking "Conan" was an attack of opportunity, and he's stated that going after Kudo Shinichi here would be less a mission and more just vindictiveness.

[Saguru nods.] That would be our traitor, yes?

Quite understood - what I'm trying to do in regards to Manor politics might make that both harder and easier.

You need to know now how difficult that could be-- Gin can recognize her by a single strand of hair. If he finds any trace of her he will turn the manor inside out looking for her. He's that obsessed.

I'd imagine the subject would be dodged, anyway, considering her situation.

Mm, well-we only have to worry about that if she shows up-and hopefully the Author will know better.

I've been thinking about it and I've come to the decision that I can't just stop making posts as Shinichi-it'd be more suspicious to abruptly stop then it would be to keep going.

-Ordinarily I'd say we should try and pull the illusion that Kudo Shinichi was sent home-but with all these plots I don't know if I'll ever be stuck in my original body so it's safer just to continue posting.

It's the Author. She brought Gin and Vermouth here.

And put us up against an undead version of Albert Fish with powers.

We do want to discourage him from getting the idea that Conan and Shinichi might be the same person. [No, you're not going to like where this is going, although it is with a very very cautious tagline.]

I don't want Kuroba in that kind of danger.

I suppose, if I was able to monitor it and tell him when and where to appear as me then it wouldn't be so bad.

We're all in danger on this; it's a matter of calculating the risks and deciding which risks taken will work in our favor and maybe put us at LESS risk later.

And he's been at being their target longer than either of us.

[Deep breath] What he did there wasn't such a bad plan, really - it was controlled in who he was letting see him; he didn't show himself around where Gin would be, it was circumstances where he'd have plenty warning if Gin was about, and it gave an eyewitness who's now seen both of you together. Ideally, that's what we'd want - controlled circumstances and getting other eyewitnesses. That, or locations too public and busy for Gin to risk trying anything. Coordinating it would make it easier.

[he lets out a heavy sigh]

But-if it were you-I mean if you were in my shoes would you still think that way?

Yes. [That ... doesn't really have much hesitation.]

We might, one day, bring them down and get them facing their crimes. But unless we're willing to use every chance we have to defend ourselves? Either we'll not manage to wound them more than a prick in the ankle, or whatever we do, will be a fast, bloody blaze of glory that none of us will survive.

We don't have a safety net. There's no-one but us to look out for ourselves here.
