[Confusion breeds chaos and within chaos, there lies the seeds of opportunity. Light is determined not to let this one slide through his fingers. There's only one serial killer Light is familiar with in the Manor and he goes by the name BB. Ordinarily Light would have been at a loss for how to probe Misora for information, but the appearance of a second L- probably the idiot Mello- made this almost too easy. He quickly boots up a program and swiftly types in the algorithm that generates L's synthesized voice. He'd constructed it before, it was child's play to do it a second time.]

Former FBI Agent Naomi Misora, may I request a few moments of your time?

[Misora just stares at the device for a few seconds. Just what is going on? Is B so bold that he's willing to risk making direct contact with her? He can't possibly have that low an opinion of her to believe she won't suspect him, can he?

Or perhaps it's Mello, but Misora would like to believe that he trusted her enough not to resort to such formalities. If Mello's the one responsible then, well, he's definitely taking his role as L a little too seriously.]

What is it?

No doubt, recent events have not escaped your vigilance. Am I correct in guessing that we both feel unpleasant nostalgia?

[No, definitely not Mello. Naomi's eyes narrow. It isn't like it's impossible to come up with a voice synthesizer, and she is perfectly aware of how talented some of the residents here are. Plenty of people can try to masquerade as L, especially after those two public displays earlier. But how many knew of her identity as a former FBI agent?

If this really is B, however, she can't let him get away again. Perhaps he has the nerve to request that they meet. Misora's grip tightened. If so, she's more than happy to oblige.]

Certainly. I'm guessing you have already made headway in the investigation?

[Light's brow furrows in contemplation. He is familiar with the Beyond Birthday case, but only up to a point. There were victims, each of whom were carved up in some fashion before the freak attempted self immolation. Light takes a small gamble.]

Beyond Birthday's modus operandi lacks subtlety. That was not the challenge in this instance. What is your expert opinion on the matter?

[This is the second time she had been asked for her opinion on the murders by "L." Now she's really paranoid. Could this possibly be a third L? Or is that what B wants her to think? Ugh, why do these people make it a habit to constantly think in circles? Misora scowls. She does not like being toyed with.]

You and I both know that this is a completely different circumstance now. Who knows what he's his motivation is this time. Although both of us can agree it has something to do with L, isn't that right, L?

[A small satisfied smile creeps on Light's face. Bingo. The woman may have been disastrously ineffectual during the Kira investigation, but if she had worked with L on the BB case, Light would have been a fool to disregard her opinion. It doesn't matter if Misora does not believe Light is L, he's already more than satisfied with the information he's received.]

A motive is something that can be established after he is apprehended. What is more relevant at this moment in time is the prevention of further bloodshed. It will be of great importance to identify any patterns and regularities in order to predict his next victim. Am I correct to assume you are capable of this much?

That is exactly my intention, but you can't possibly expect me to figure out an exact pattern in the span of 2 days from just 2 victims alone?

[Misora rolls her eyes. Obviously this isn't L, but she had just been reminded of the last time she had questioned L like that. He had simply bragged about how he could have done better in return. She respected L, sure, but really? The nerve! And this guy's doing a fairly good impression too. Naomi just got unreasonably more annoyed at this mystery person.]

But I disagree on your first point. Knowing the motivation is extremely important precisely in apprehending the criminal himself. If we know his motivation, we know why he acts the way he does, how he will act in response to a situation, how he will carry out future plans, which might just give us the means of corning him.

But if you do not, it would be the equivalent of accepting the state of affairs. You have a fine head on your shoulders. I suggest that you use it.

As far as the motivation goes, what you have said is true, but time and space are against him. The conditions in this place make it such that he will eventually be caught. In other words, everything is on your side. I am curious to see how long you will allow this game to continue.

[Misora had gotten that annoying feeling of arrogance from L the last time she had interacted with him, but despite that she could at least sense his respect for her. Behind this one's fake compliments, however, there spewed nothing but utter condescension. It was as if he had wanted to provoke her on purpose. Not even trying to hide it anymore.]

Then how would you go about it, L? You know him better than I do, after all. You are the detective. I'm just a retired agent. So please, enlighten me.

Or could it be that you have no knowledge on the subject at all?

[Ah yes, perhaps Light had pushed the taunting a little too far. But really, could he be blamed for it? There is, after all, something intoxicating about masquerading as L. In his world, figuratively and literally, this would have been de rigeur, but as the Author so kindly stripped that away from Light, this little game provides him with at least some of his intended satisfaction. If only Misora hadn't been so perceptive....]

Ahh, but you have the benefit of an outside perspective Naomi Misora. I too, am subject to personal biases. It would be hubris to think otherwise. [...Which he does.]
