{14th Calculation} Working to soften the blow [In person]
[Gene knows that there are some things that need work in person and one thing he needed to do was acclimate Jake to how his device works and how to read the maps. Gene had a lot of work to do and he didn't have enough time in the day to get it all done. The school still needed attention but his main priority was getting the new residents settled in despite the chaos.
He knocks on Jake's door and waits patiently.]

You need something, Pardner?

[Indicating to the hall which was a marked difference from the Victorian decor.]

[Jake glances down the hall at Gene's indication.]
This sort of thing happen a lot?

[He hands over the hardcopy of the welcome packet.]
Thought this could help you out.

[Jake takes the packet.]
All them folks seem mighty convinced there's somethin' going on with that author, though I couldn't rightly say what.
[He tips his hat slightly and holds up the pamphlet.]
Thanks, Pardner. I'll be sure to give this a look-see when I got a moment.

[He gives a nod to his head.]
Take your time. Trust me, you'll want to read it with a clear head.

[Except, well, being in a new location. In space.]
I'll look it over first chance I get.

[Feeling that his endeavor is drawing to a close, he gives a flash smile.]
Well, I better show you how to operate your device. Has anyone shown you yet?
no subject
[It's just a cellphone, right? Or could it do more. Come to think of it, some folks had video, didn't they?]
No one's shown me anything, Pardner. That newfangled doohickey still got some secrets to share?

It takes a bit of getting used to but it's not all that bad. Be careful what you say publicly. It can eventually backfire on you.
[He's been a victim of that and that was a conscious decision he made them stopped it before it went too far.]

It ain't private to begin with?

[Jake casually pulls out his knife.]
You folks get a lot of eavesdroppers on your conversations?
[Pause.]
Some hombres up to no good?

But that's not the only incident. There was a serial killer out and about and he was killing people at random. Of all times, and this is really going to sound strange, even the bad guys were helping out. Well, those that had any scruples about their own best interests, that is. The murders were grisly and the people of the Manor were really scared. Then right in the middle of the investigation there was this riot. It started on the 25th of January and didn't end until the 29th, I think.
It impeded the investigation but in a lot of ways, it saved lives too. At least we knew that the people were alive that were involved in the riots weren't the ones that were involved in the murders.
sorry, at work
Sounds like y'all keep busy.
[Pause]
What are the lawmen like 'round these parts?
It's okay. I was distracted.
[He gives a small smile.]
