[Saguru has flipped on the Blackberry in the courtyard of the Hofbräuhaus, over dinner and ... well, that's a half empty liter mug. Yes, after Halloween, and after a few days spent ... it started out as him fussing over Mukuro and had at least one good evening of him trying to continue such after having definitely had too much to drink, and in between flitting around the city enjoying the fest, he's been basically taking advantage of the fest to mash the reset button on his tendency to think too much about things repeatedly, although he's actually fairly coherent at the moment, as much as he seems ... disgruntled.]

I have a question for everyone.

Why the Hell aren't we in London right now? Not that I mind Oktoberfest, Germany's lovely and all, but there's an actual holiday back home. Fireworks and everything.

Although I suppose this supports my theory of where the Author's from ... blasted brain-dead insult to Americans.

[There's a lazy, dull glare shot at the traditional Bavarian band off-camera somewhere, before he rolls his eyes and raises his mug, voice thick with sarcasm.] Remember, remember, the Fifth of November.

I know it's entirely the wrong country's holiday for you, but what would it be worth to get a hand setting up last-minute fireworks tonight?

More tracking what holidays she keeps and how well. Holidays that're observed in America are kept stably and on proper dates, no less - there aren't many countries that make as big a deal out of Halloween as America. Many of the trappings on some of the holiday parties are what one would normally see in the US, as well, even if we've been taken to, ostensibly, different part of the world for that week. The only thing she missed was the Fourth of July this year, but I remember there having been a Thanksgiving feast not long after I'd arrived, and properly timed - very much an American holiday.

She observed Carnevale two weeks early as a backdrop for Valentine's Day, and Oktoberfest a month late; Guy Fawkes Day has been completely forgotten. Judging by Manorcon and a few other details, she seems to have a fascination for Japanese popular culture on her world, but has never actually observed a Japanese holiday.

[She's not sure what Hakuba-kun's referring to -- the fifth of November is today, but she can't think of a holiday that's there. But then, she doesn't know that much about England... Kaito would probably know.

She's seen her daddy drinking before (and gotten drunk herself, but she doesn't think she'll be talking about that to anyone any time soon) and... Hakuba-kun looks awfully relaxed for him.]

...How much have you had to drink, Hakuba-kun?

[Oops. Well, at least it's not the other night where he's pretty sure he'd conked out curled up against Mukuro...]

[As much as he's still not quite on the ball fully, he does snap to a little bit, now that he's ... actually got a reason to try to pull the normal self-control bit.]

Ah... about this, and a few samples at fest tables?

[Her lips quirk into a small smile. Straightening up, fussing with his collar, maybe an embarrassed cough- Daddy had often done that when he was drinking and Aoko'd appeared. It was kind of amusing seeing Hakuba-kun do the same thing, except Hakuba-kun hadn't fiddled with his collar much or looked embarrassed, just ...straightened and somehow looked more together.]

[After that horrible, horrible time in October, Aoko was making sure to enjoy herself with a noisy, cheerful party, with lots of people and lots of dancing.]

[ ...And after the previous incident, this not only was a case of "...somewhere there was an alternate universe doppelganger", but a very ...very nice sort of change; there actually was a second or two pause that yes, she had caught on, and no, she wasn't going to get after him.]

[He smiled, relaxing a little - albeit not quite back to "don't care about anything let me be a puddle that isn't thinking".]

Yes ... it's nice to get a break, and the last time I was here for Oktoberfest, I was chasing a case - I didn't exactly have time to stop and enjoy the festival. How've you been doing? [After what'd gone on in Silent Hill ... it was nice to see her happy.]

Aoko is-- [The word 'fine' is about to escape, but she hesitates, drawing her lip between her teeth.] --okay.

[She's not fine, not fully okay, but she's getting better, which is the important thing. And perhaps she's distracting herself a lot, but that's okay too, right?

Aoko brightens a little, twisting the camera to show Hakuba-kun the lively dancing she's watching from her (comparitively) quiet corner.]

I know what holiday it is, but how does that holiday help you figure out where the Author is from?

Well, from what else has been shown of her personality, she's likely to be going by the calendar she's most familiar with...

She gets dates off on things like Carnevale and Oktoberfest, skipped Guy Fawkes day, has never observed a Japanese holiday - but so far, has observed American holidays reliably and properly timed, including Thanksgiving on the American date, which isn't observed in very many countries at all.

So you're saying she is sticking to what she knows?

Roughly, yes - I'd guess that she's aware of some more visible things from other cultures, but her priorities are on what's familiar, and since I don't think she realizes this is real, it's probably part of her idea of celebrating.

Who's "the Author"? [... Oh. Right. And...] ... Saguru-niichan.

[D'awww. One of these days ... he really needed to let on how much he knew.]

The one that's in control of this place; from what I've been able to find over the past year, she seems to be the source of the reality-warps here, and is apparently an American teenage fangirl with no clue that we're actually real - hence things like that trip to that foggy town... as long as she doesn't know we're real, she's a small child with an ant farm.

[... Reality warps. Fangirl. This really wasn't helping to answer his questions right now.]

So things like that happen all the time? Randomly? Or is there a set pattern to it?

[You just went from Silent Hill to Munich during a mis-timed holiday. If it walks like a duck, has feathers like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it's probably not a platypus.]

Usually things change weekly; some things will last for more than one week with changes, and sometimes there'll be a half-week event with not much happening the rest of the week, but usually it's a fairly regular and predictable timetable. Unfortunately, what happens is nowhere near as predictable outside of her tendency to observe holidays.

She celebrates holidays as well, huh. [Not that Conan wasn't already theorizing about it since the Oktoberfest event started.] How long has Saguru-niichan been here? Does he know how long Heiji-niichan has been here too?

That foggy town was her idea of Halloween. [After all, her 'celebrating' didn't necessarily mean it'd be a party to them...]

[And as much as that was very acid-tinged, there's an odd, wry smile.] I've been here eleven months, twenty-nine days, eight hours, and about twenty minutes ... it'll be a full year early tomorrow morning. As for Hattori, he's been here about nine months, seven days, and somewhere within ten hours.

... I'd hate to see what she did for previous years.

[Conan will just stare dumbly at Hakuba. He can't tell if it's because of the (almost) precise timing, or because the two detectives have been here for that long.]

But-- That can't be true. I just saw Heiji-niichan recently. He brought a case to ojiisan.

According to someone who was there, it wasn't nearly that bad last year. [Yep, that's a slightly out of character grin that goes along with "Yes, we're the butt of the universe's joke! :D"!]

Time doesn't work right here; you can ask him yourself - might want to check what the last thing that was happening before he showed up here was for him, too.

Do you mean that we could possibly come from different points in time? Heiji-niichan could be from my future? Or past?

That's been my experience; I'm afraid I'm not going to be much help, since I had been in Paris when I arrived here, and most of your cases don't quite make the news that far... nevermind that outside of Kid heists, if something does make the news in your area, I usually have to play off inference to place which ones might've been yours. [PS, even if he wasn't aware of the Org, he'd have been stalking you anyway because you've gotten close to His Thief a few times.]

The only reason I can't quote how long I've been here to the second is that I was asleep at the time, which means I can't quite pinpoint it, and I know you've encountered how much I value precision in timekeeping before. Kaitou Kid is my main case, and one I've hardly given up on. I can quote, from memory, every heist that's happened since the original thirty years ago. Unless he abandoned his usual tactics and became a cat burglar without my notice, no, I doubt I've missed at least hearing of one.

[...This guy must have been hammered something special coming to him. Oddly enough it didn't particularly bother him. He had felt horribly useless the past few weeks, and getting called to do a job, even something as simple and stupid as this, felt kind of refreshing. It was something he could do. He was useful to people still...
