Detective Notes 07 | Video

[Naoto had been pondering something for the past few days, the fact that it had been quiet was odd enough, but that wasn't what got her really thinking. Staring at the Blackberry she kept her game face on, one that was rather serious, calm and if anything as serious as one can get.]

It has been brought to my attention from someone that, yes this may be a kidnapping by a teenage girl, but I'm curious to know one thing. Why were we targeted? Why out of millions, possible billions of people were we chosen to be here.

[She hadn't changed expression once as she glanced down at a notebook that was held lightly in her hands.]

In most investigations I've been involved in over my years, I've seen various connections between a case and the victims. There is always a connection in one way or another, no matter how small.

[She gripped her note book slightly before flipping a page full of various notes she had taken.]

I'm voicing this to see if anyone thinks they have found that connection between all of us. I'd appreciate it if you let me know, thank you.

[She smiles slightly, happy with what she has said.]

As to the person who mentioned this, I am thankful. Maybe we can finally figure out more than we could have before.

This place is a manor of sorts.

Okay, I get that but where? More importantly, where is my daughter? She's five years old about this tall, [indicates height with his hand] and has long brown hair with brown eyes. Her name is Lyn. If you find her let me know. She's getting a bit too independent for her own good.

[He's now looking under couch cushions.]

I assure you sir your daughter wherever she may be won't be able to hide under couch cushions.

[Gene had to laugh.] You don't know my daughter. She's able to squeeze between the frame and the springs. She's sneaky. I don't think she can do that with these couches though. I can't get my arm through which means that she wouldn't be able to get through that frame.

Trust me, she wiggled under the back seat of a van.

I'll believe you, but I'm sorry to say I haven't seen your daughter since my arrival here. In fact I haven't seen that many children past a certain age.

Oh god...

[Now it's hitting him. Gene hasn't seen many children here at all and the fact that his memories of this place were hazy at best it's not going to be an easy pill to swallow.]

I'm back...

[The people that he once knew here were not so easy to remember. It was for the better.]

Have you been here before?

I honestly thought that I dreamed of this strange place and now I know it's real...or I'm in some freakish nightmare again but that's unlikely. Is Nina here?

Nina? Was she another resident that was here when you were?

Yes.

[Gene takes in a deep breathe before he continues.]

I hope she's okay back home. She was starting to lose it here.

[Coughing is heard on the other end before his voice came through.]

Kidnapping, huh? Have you decided to ask the entire place what they think of this crappy service in not-so-Disney World slash Zombieland? If so, I'll tell you this; I was in prison following a botched trial of mishandled evidence. Traumatic you ask? Hell yes it was.

I haven't, but I'm pretty sure the answer would be the same as my own.

Are you sure about that? Not everyone goes through the same situations in order to be placed in some strange land with no idea how they got there other than with the logical conclusion of a kidnapping somewhere.

Still, it's curious how you came up with this. Did you get the idea from someone or is it mostly situational?

[Of his times as an undercover cop, he's not much for getting his picture taken or having cameras on him. He hasn't realized yet that his "walkie-talkie" is also a camera phone.]

Man, whoever took us has some pretty high tech stuff.

Someone I spoke to gave me the idea, I thought that as a detective back home, I should at least mention it and hope for the best.

As for the kidnappings it's rather odd the way they go about. There is a pattern to when new people appear, but that isn't a connection that connects us all. It has to be something big, but I can't put my finger on it.

Hm, you got a point there. Still, finding that connection is like finding a needle in a haystack. My guess would be we're good looking but that's a shot in the dark.

[Yep, he's grinning and it's showing in his voice. It's a sarcastic poke but a poke nonetheless.]

I don't think that would be a good enough connection. If it were true, it would questions the authors motives.

[You could practically hear his eyes roll.]

I know that. Look, whoever owns this place has their reasons. For now, I'm not going to bash my head against a brick wall to try to figure it out. The answer, if there's any, will come to us.

Of course, but I have to always keep an eye out just in case people miss it. I assume you understand that there are many things that happen here, we need people to be able to keep calm in those situations.

Yeah, I know that. Try telling that to someone that firmly believes that they are right one hundred percent of the time. It's the stubborn ones that fail the inner strength check and it's those guys that bring others down. If there's a chance to convince a few to "go with the flow", our chances of survival are multiplied.

I can... understand that. It's not easy to convince people otherwise, but if you always have that feeling that it isn't right, it's best to prove it. Although I don't think going with the flow would be such a good idea.

Yeah...

[There's a momentary pause before he continues.]

Did you find out anything?

You think there's a connection?

I believe so, though as to what I have no idea.

I don't see one.

[Because if Burter doesn't see it, it must not be there.]

While we don't see anything right now, we might be able to later.

Oh! I know!

We all breathe oxygen!

Does that count?

I don't believe that would count, as I already knew that and it won't make it a connection since we all need it to live.

[Ran holds her chin in thought. She's not usually the one that figures out the mysteries...that's what her father was for. Or Shinichi. But neither of them were there.]

At first I thought the similarity was that we were all Japanese, but now I'm beginning to see that isn't the case, necessarily. Part of me wonders if everyone here is even human...

You believe that not everyone here is human.

[Ran blushed. Did it sound as strange as she thought it sounded?]

Well...I mean, there's that real big blue-skinned guy...I know there are a lot of foreigners around, but I've never heard of anyone with blue skin before!

...have you?

No, but I believe I have just spoken to the person you are on about. I assumes it was a guy in costume.

...it's a really good costume then. You think he's a professional cosplayer?

I wouldn't know. Though given the detail it's either very good costume, or this place is more weird than I expected.

How weird do you expect it to be, exactly..?

I thought anything that was out of the ordinary would apply to this matter, but due to certain things... I can't say for sure.

...certain things? [Ran tilts her head.]

You know, maybe you should discuss this with Hattori-kun and Conan-kun. Hattori-kun's a detective, and Conan-kun may be a little kid, but he seems to have a good eye for details most grown-ups don't see.

I'll make sure to keep those names in mind, should I even be in need of something like that.

[Ran nervously smiles. Detectives usually have delicate egos, so hopefully she didn't offend.]

J-just in case you need to compare notes, I mean! Two heads are better than one, and all that! Ahahahaha....!

You mean like gathering various bits and pieces. One might have some information I don't have and vice versa. It's usually what happens in a investigation in order to have a better understanding.

Uh--right!!

Ah, I'm sorry if you don't understand. I tend to get carried away when it comes to an investigation.

[Ran waves a hand in front of her face, grinning.]

Oh believe me, I get it, I get it! I have a few friends who are the same way!
