[ A short pause, then the message continues: ]

i don't know what's going on. i'm scared. are you here, light? it looks like i'm in your room but -- you don't have a stuffed animal like this, do you? (i wouldn't let you live it down if you did!)

i found this cell phone next to it. am i dreaming? but everything feels too solid. right? i can't

[ Another pause, this one longer. ]

i mean i don't feel unsafe. maybe it's because things look so familiar. maybe i'm about to wake up! .... right?

[ And after a final, hanging pause, she places the blackberry back on the bed, accidentally pressing its keys in passing: ]

[Oh the welcome packet. Naomi really does not like the welcome packet.]

Yes, it's a little outdated. Of the officers, there is only Tom Hanson that I know of. We usually work as partners, and he's very good at his job. Crane is also around, but I don't know him too well. Of the detectives, Saguru is definitely one of the most reliable ones I've come across.

[She hesitates for a while considering whether or not to mention Mello or Sands, neither of whom she trusts completely.] As for the others, I don't know much about them so I can't say. We're not very organized, regrettably.

What about you, Sayu? Are you interested in the field as well?

[ Sayu blushes a little, shifts in her seat. ]

No, it's not really my thing. I tend to tune out ten minutes after Light and dad start talking about their cases. [ Punctuated by a laugh --

-- and then a slight, sudden feeling of discomfort. Remember, Sayu? This conversation's private. But what's there to hide? ]

Um. [ She forces a little smile. ] Yeah.

[Their cases, huh?]

Well, you're still young. You should probably focus more on school first anyway. I'm terribly sorry that you had to get dragged into somewhere like this at such a promising point in your life.

[And this time, she actually means it. As much as Naomi wanted Yagami and the rest of his family and allies to suffer in the deepest part of her subconscious, she can't help but sympathize with the innocent, especially if they're a child, a weakness she's well aware of.]

[ School! She'd forgotten all about it! If she doesn't try to keep up, if she doesn't at least look at math and try to understand it, she'll -- ! (But... considering the multiverse theory, is that even a concern? Does that mean... she won't need to deal with math ever again? Until she gets back home, of course!

And then Sayu realizes her quiet might have dragged on a little too long. ]

Oh! It's... it's not okay, but we're all dealing with it. Everyone's lost something coming here. I never really liked studying anyway. [ Another laugh followed by a more genuine smile. ]

Thanks a lot, Miss Naomi.

[Lost something? More like everything.]

Or even before coming here ...

[It was spoken rather absent-mindedly, and Naomi silently cursed herself for still not being able to let go of the past.]

Hm?

[Oh, stupid! Why did she just let it slip like that. No one else needed to know anything about her personal life and its failures, and it was against Misora's pride to go fishing for pity, especially from a kid.]

[On second thought ...]

Did Kira ever exist in your world?

[ The revulsion in Sayu's voice -- not to mention her face -- is palpable. ]

Yeah. Dad started having to work over overtime, basically, since [ .... wait ] well, Kira became such a big deal and dad's the chief detective and everything. [ Good save! ] Light pays a lot more attention to the news than I do, but... I don't know. I don't really want to deal with it. I don't like Kira.

[ Something clicks then and Sayu's eyes glitter. ]

Oh, Miss Naomi, did Kira...?

[ She can't ask out of politeness; her eyes betray her concern. Only one thing Kira can do, anyway. ]

[The girl sure liked to talk a lot, but it didn't escape Naomi's notice that when her mind's focused on a subject, she can be quite clever too. If the poor girl wasn't related to Kira, Misora might allow herself to like her. Ugh, as if trying to deal with Amane hadn't been hard enough on her conscience.]

Yes. He took away someone very close to me, someone who was also investigating the case though not with the Japanese police. That event really made it hard for me to trust anyone. However, knowing now that you and I share the same opinion on the murderer, I feel a bit better. I only hope the same fate won't befall on your family.

[ Shock mixes with anger, disgust. ]

Kira -- Kira killed someone that wasn't a criminal?! That's even worse! I mean, I've never thought that... killing anybody was ever good, but I thought Kira only killed criminals.

[ Suddenly, Sayu looks like she's been slapped. ]

Wait a minute. Wait. What... what if Kira kills dad?! Kira must know that dad's working on the case, right, or at least has connections? If Kira killed that person who was important to you who was investigating, too, then couldn't -- ?!

[ Don't cry. But her eyes glitter more brightly anyway. ]

[Naomi had intended to get close to Sayu in order to use their "friendship" to force Light into a confession or at the very least put him on guard. How long would it take before his sister knew enough to cause Yagami to snap? However, Misora had never intended for the girl to break down herself. Suddenly an unwanted sense of guilt surged over her.]

Um, hey, it'll be alright. Nothing's for certain after all. I-I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you upset.

Oh, no! [ Sniff. ] It's not your fault, Miss Naomi. [ Sniff. ] I mean, I've always known in the back of my head that could happen after L made his broadcast, but... I was just reminded. That's all. [ Sniff. ] It's okay.

I'm so sorry.

It's my fault for bringing it up. How about we forget all that and just make the best of the situation now?

[To be honest, Naomi is taking a liking to the girl. However, this offer of friendship is still somewhat artificial.]

Has anyone shown you around the manor yet?

[ Sayu smiles a little as she dries her eyes with a sleeve. ]

Yeah. You're right. It's... not just Kira I was crying about, so don't worry about it.

[ Implication obvious. But she begins to brighten: ]

I had some ramen in the kitchen with Hayato! He even got me some shoes from his room. Have you ever met him? [ Remembering the running "I suck" theme from their conversations, she adds: ] He's a really nice person. I'd still be starving if it wasn't for him. [ .... Discounting the fact Light would've done something about it. Whatever; not the point! ]

I haven't seen any other rooms, though. This place looks huge on the maps Conan sent me!

Hayato? That name sounds familiar. Could you describe him?

Yeah, sure! His full name's Hayato Gokudera. He's [ she scrunches up her mouth a little, motions with her hand ] a little taller than me, just as skinny. He has long, gray hair [ she pauses here; prematurely? maybe it's the stress ] and green eyes. [ Sayu smiles. ] We're the same age.

Oh, that br- kid.

[Aw geez. That's the first friend she's going to make here? Poor girl's going to get blown up along with the brat.]

That boy doesn't exactly have the best reputation around here. So it's nice to know that someone can get through to him at least.

He's told me.

[ And how. ]

But! Like I said before, he's a really, really nice person. He has good reasons for why he [ hides dynamite in his clothes ] acts like he does. So... please don't be harsh with him. He --

[ -- wait, bad idea; would probably constitute a breach of privacy. The sentence tapers away. ]

.... Um. Yeah!

Yeah. [Sighs.] I'm aware of that actually.

[Doesn't make him any less annoying.]

[Although it's more or less out of a sense of obligation than an actual desire to help.]

The inside of the manor is large, but it doesn't take long to get familiar with it. [Especially since you can never leave.] So all in all, I think you should be fine.
